Preventive Medicine

Thanks for wanting to learn more about preventive medicine

We look forward to you scheduling an appointment with us to discuss preventive medicine options for your health and wellness.

Effective Preventive Medicine Matters

Did you know that preventive services including immunizations, screenings, preventive medications, and counseling give the most bang for the buck? It is true, that preventive services actually do base on research from the National Commission on Prevention Priorities.

Preventive Care really is super important. Most plans must cover a set of preventive services – like shots and screenings – at no cost to you.For example, depending on your age, you may have access to no-cost preventive services such as:

  • Blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol tests
  • Many cancer screenings, including mammograms and colonoscopies
  • Counseling on such topics as quitting smoking, losing weight, eating healthfully, treating depression, and reducing alcohol use
  • Regular well-baby and well-child visits
  • Routine vaccinations against diseases such as measles, polio, or meningitis
  • Counseling, screening, and vaccines to ensure healthy pregnancies
  • Flu shots and other vaccines

Childhood Immunization

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends vaccinations against hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), pneumonia, and influenza for average-risk children.

Getting vaccinations is truly a cost-saving and highly effective and has made childhood deaths and suffering from the above diseases rare. This is why Dr. Joe thinks it is so so important to get your child immunized as soon as possible.

Immunizing children also protects the health of the community, including those who are too young to be vaccinated or cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, as circulating epidemics cannot easily take hold in an immune population.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends getting a cancer-related screening based on your family’s health history. A colonoscopy remains the gold standard for early detection and prevention of colon cancer, although other options include fecal occult blood testing and sigmoidoscopy.

Colon cancer is the 3rd highest incidence of cancer in the U.S. with 106,180 new cases of colon cancer (54,040 men and 52,140 women). An estimated 1,880,725 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2020. Deaths from colorectal cancer among people younger than 55 have increased 1% per year from 2008 to 2017.

19,000 deaths could be prevented each year if people over age 50 were periodically screened as recommended. It is estimated that only 1/3 of adults are up to date with screening. The risks of colon perforation are quite small but this is why Dr. Joe thinks it is so so important to get your screening scheduled as soon as possible.

Cervical Cancer Screening

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends getting a cancer-related screening based on your family’s health history. Screening for cervical cancer in women is certainly effective to help detect cervical cancer.

This screening is largely responsible for the 50% decline in cervical cancer mortality over the past 30 years. Further long-term benefits remain to be studied for the HPV vaccination series, but this also looks quite promising for women.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology regularly releases new guidelines on screenings, which is why Dr. Joe thinks it is so so important to get your screening scheduled as soon as possible.

High Blood Pressure Screening

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends getting a Hypertension Screening also known as screening patients for high blood pressure. It recommended that blood pressure be measured routinely in all adults over 18 and that anti-hypertension medications be taken to prevent the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

30% of American adults have hypertension, resulting in at least $100 billion in medical costs. Due to various factors, only 1/3rd of hypertension cases are controlled. Many suitable generic medicines exist in this category. A low salt diet, weight loss, and exercise are also very effective means to lower blood pressure.

The health of your heart and how it functions is very serious. Dr. Joe thinks it is so so important to get your screening scheduled as soon as possible.

Cholesterol Screening

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends getting a Cholesterol Screening for all men and women over 35 years old. 21% of adults age 35+ have high cholesterol. Of these, most will develop high cholesterol before age 55.

One out of 4 adults who do not control their high cholesterol will have a cholesterol-attributable heart attack. One out of 3 will die of cholesterol-attributable coronary heart disease. Dr. Joe wants you to get screened routinely for lipid disorders among all men aged 35+ and all women aged 45+.

Also, if you have a family history of coronary heart disease that patients 20-35 should get screened too. This can be treated with lipid-lowering drugs to prevent the incidence of any cardiovascular disease once detected. Get your screening scheduled as soon as possible.

Diabetes Screening

Dr. Joseph Rosado recommends getting a Diabetes Screening for all men and women annually. Did you know that diabetes is a leading cause of disability and death in the United States.

Diabetes increases the risk of serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, blindness, nerve damage, which can cause you to lose a toe, foot, or leg, and potentially kidney failure as well.

The good news is that you can do a lot to prevent or delay getting type 2 diabetes, including watching your weight, eating healthy, and staying active. Dr. Joe wants you to get screened routinely for symptoms of diabetes in men, women, children, and of course elderly family members too.
